George and Josephine Russell and their parents (and in 1938 their cousin Raymond Hubbard) sailed with the Ransomes in the Northern River Pirates in 1938 and 1939 in a Fairway yacht. George kept a log of the voyages (CFT pp 142-4)
They went sailing with Arthur in [Nancy Blackett]] when Evegenia was too busy, and were instructed by him. Arthur said to Josephine that his fictional children were Composites .... They’re a mixture. They were real children, but now they’ve become something different; they’re from my head. He used to refer casually to what Dick or Dorothea would have thought to something that was happening to us (CFT pp184-6).
In World War II George was killed at the Battle of El Alamein.
