The Igloo is a rough stone hut with no windows on a flat area or platform in the woods above Rio Bay and Holly Howe, which the Swallows, Amazons and D’s use as a daily base in Winter Holiday until they get the Fram. It is called by the Eskimo name of igloo.
The igloo is made of rough stones, Dick says that It’s very old. You can tell by the big stones (near the ground) and round corners. Later builders put smaller stones on top. The Swallows and Amazons roofed it with larch poles and a tarpaulin then a sheet of old iron roofing metal, extended the chimney with stones and a stovepipe, and filed an old railing for a fireplace crosspiece WH4,6. In Winter Holiday they also use snow to build around the igloo.
