- 1942, August: Arthur gets a devastating criticism, a "bombshell", of The Picts and the Martyrs from Genia. Cape is ready to publish, and the publishers have paper for 25,000.
- 1942, December: Arthur shows his mother the book; she likes it so publication goes ahead; though too late for Christmas, when Cape had hoped to sell 20,000 (Life, page 389).
